Understanding the Constitution
PragerU is offering a free course to teach people the constitution.
Talking to your friends who are in the Maga cult. Actually it is good advice to talking to anyone.
Below is my summary- but I really suggest you read the full article.
Remember, the person you used to know years ago is still there under the layers of misinformation they believe now.
Step 1 Talk to them about things from the past, build a connection to them.
Step 2- Ask Questions, be prepared to not react to what they say.
Even if they tell you that JFK has been reborn.
Don’t argue or contradict them.
Instead, ask them why do you believe this to be true? Where did you get this information.
Be patient, give them time to think and then respond.
as you are talking to them sum up what they said and say do I understand this correctly you believe….
Step 3- Be prepared to give a gentle rebuttal.
Ask if they would be willing to reading a source you trust.
Ask if you can share your thoughts and why you are concerned.
Don’t push them to hard, You do not want them to leave the conversation angry or upset. So, If you see them moving away from a friendly conversation, ask them to talk about something else.
You’re goal is to give them other ideas to think about not to get them to change their mind today.
Step 4- Know your own triggers and theirs.
Self Awareness is important
If you attack what they believe or they feel like you are hostile, they will refuse to change their mind.
Step 5- Be prepared to end the discussion.
I love you, yet at the same time let them know you don’t want to argue.
I want to connect, not debate
or let’s not talk about politics.
Step 6- Keep an open connection.
If you do nothing else, leave them a door open to come back to build a relationship.
It is really hard for people to admit they are wrong.
